Best full-grain leather wallet for men under $100
Full-grain, half off, and built to outlast your phone, your car and probably your lease.
Get the Taylor Stitch Minimalist Billfold for $49 if you carry a few cards and want it slim. Get the Beckett Simonon Bennett Bifold for $79 if you want RFID blocking and leather that ages into something. Both are full-grain and both are half off right now.
Full-grain, top-grain, genuine: what it actually means
Full-grain is the top layer of the hide, left intact. It's the strongest part, it keeps the natural texture, and it darkens and softens with use. That change is called patina, and it's the whole point.
Top-grain has been sanded to remove marks. It looks smoother in the store and ages worse. "Genuine leather" sounds like a promise but it's one of the lowest grades, usually split from the bottom of the hide and finished with paint. If the tag says genuine leather and nothing else, keep walking.
1. Best slim wallet: Taylor Stitch Minimalist Billfold, $49
100% full-grain Spanish cowhide, made in Turkey. Black outside, tan leather lining inside, hand-painted edges. Six card slots and one cash slot, with a hidden card liner that keeps it from stretching out and getting bulky. Folded, it's 4 inches by 3.5 inches, which means it sits flat in a front pocket.
It was $98. At $49, if you carry it for ten years, you're paying about forty cents a month for a wallet you won't be embarrassed to pull out on a date.
2. Best for patina: Beckett Simonon Bennett Bifold, $79
Full-grain calfskin from a tannery in Arzignano, Italy, rated Gold by the Leather Working Group, which is their highest rating. Calfskin is finer and softer than cowhide, and the natural markings mean no two wallets look the same. Six card slots, a center compartment for cash, and RFID protection to block card skimmers.
Brown is the one to get. It will look noticeably richer after six months of daily use. Down from $159, and black is also in stock.
Bonus: the bag that goes with it
If you're also hauling a laptop around in a backpack from high school, the Tanner Goods Canyon Crossbody at $57.50 is the upgrade. It's 10 oz waxed canvas with full-grain leather trim, so rain rolls off, and it fits a small laptop plus everything else. Half off from $115.
How to make a wallet last
Don't overstuff it. Leather stretches to fit what you put in it and doesn't shrink back. Take it out of your back pocket when you sit, which is better for the wallet and your back. If it gets soaked, let it air dry away from heat. A little leather conditioner once a year keeps it from drying out.
The call
Five cards or fewer: Taylor Stitch. More cards, cash, or you want the best leather here: Beckett Simonon. Either way, retire the velcro. The $239 starter wardrobe uses the Taylor Stitch, and the flannel guide covers what to wear with it. Or see everything on sale.
