The $239 starter wardrobe that actually lasts
Five pieces, $238.79, and not one of them falls apart by spring.
Here's the whole kit up front: a $39 Outerknown sweatshirt, a $40.80 regenerative cotton pocket tee, the $64 All-Terrain Pant, a $45.99 Mack Weldon flannel and a $49 full-grain wallet. Total: $238.79. Full price would run you $510.
Most guys build a first wardrobe backwards. Ten fast-fashion tees, two pairs of jeans that bag out at the knee, a wallet that started peeling in month three. You spend the same money and own nothing worth keeping. Flip it. Buy fewer things, buy them better, and buy them on sale.
1. The sweatshirt: Outerknown Team Crew, $39
Organic cotton fleece, cut a little lighter than Outerknown's heavyweight crews, which is exactly what you want for three seasons out of four. Olive Night goes with denim, khaki, black, all of it. At half off it costs less than the mall brand with a logo the size of your face.
2. The tee: Outerknown Groovy Pocket Tee, $40.80
Made from Regenerative Organic Certified cotton, with a real chest pocket. True Black is the one to start with: it hides wear, never looks washed out, and works under the flannel or the sweatshirt. One good black tee beats a drawer of thin ones.
3. The pant: Outerknown All-Terrain, $64
This is the travel pant that doesn't look like a travel pant. Organic cotton with stretch, a hidden zip pocket, a cut that works with sneakers or boots. It was $128. At $64 it's the best price-per-wear in the whole kit, because you'll wear it three days a week and nobody will notice.
4. The overshirt: Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Flannel, $45.99
Grey tartan, brushed soft, built with Thermolite so it holds heat but lets sweat out. Wear it buttoned with the chinos for dinner, open over the tee on Saturday. At 67% off it's the biggest markdown in the kit.
Want something sharper? The Mack Weldon 37.5 Oxford at $39.99 fills the same slot. Every guy needs one blue oxford.
5. The wallet: Taylor Stitch Minimalist Billfold, $49
Full-grain Spanish cowhide. Full-grain matters: it's the top layer of the hide, so it darkens and softens instead of cracking. Six card slots and a cash pocket. You'll carry it for ten years, and at half price that works out to about forty cents a month.
How to wear it
Monday: pocket tee, All-Terrain pant, white sneakers. Wednesday: flannel buttoned, same pant, boots. Saturday: sweatshirt over the tee, jeans you already own. Five pieces, a week of outfits, no thinking.
What to skip
Skip anything with a giant logo, anything labeled "genuine leather" (that's the lowest grade, sanded and painted), and any tee that feels thin in the store. If you can see your hand through it, it's done in six months.
When you're ready for round two, the fall knits guide and the chino breakdown pick up where this leaves off. Or go straight to the full rack.
