Waffle knits, rugbies and real tees: what to wear this fall
Texture is the cheat code. Here's how to use it.
The short version: get the Mack Weldon WARMKNIT Waffle Crew at $49.99 for everyday, and if you want one piece people remember, the Taylor Stitch Rugby in Burnt Olive at $89.60. Both are on sale. Both will outlive anything you can buy in a three-pack.
What waffle knit actually is
Waffle knit, also called thermal, is fabric knitted into a grid of tiny raised squares. The pockets trap a thin layer of warm air, so it runs warmer than flat jersey and breathes better than fleece. It also has texture, which is the quiet trick: a plain outfit with one textured piece looks intentional.
Mack Weldon's version adds Thermolite, a hollow-core fiber made to hold warmth without weight. Wear it alone with chinos, or as the layer under an open flannel.
Why the rugby earns its price
The Taylor Stitch Rugby is twelve-ounce organic cotton jersey. For context, a typical cheap tee is around four or five ounces. Weight is what keeps a knit from going thin, twisting at the seams and losing its shape. Add a twill collar, fourteen-ounce rib cuffs and rubber buttons, and you have a shirt that gets better every year you wear it. Sizes are thin, so don't wait.
The details that separate good from fine
Taped neck and shoulder seams keep the neckline from stretching. Ribbed cuffs and collars hold their shape. Garment-dyed pieces are dyed after sewing, so they shrink at the factory instead of in your machine. Look for those three and you'll rarely buy a dud.
The four to buy
For everyday warmth: the WARMKNIT Waffle Crew, $49.99, in Total Eclipse navy.
For a statement: the Rugby Shirt in Burnt Olive, $89.60.
For flat jersey: the Outerknown Groovy Pocket Tee in True Black, $40.80. Regenerative organic certified cotton and a real pocket.
For dressing it up: the Brody Sweater Tee at $64.80, a 14-gauge organic cotton knit cut like a tee. Chinos and loafers, done.
Care, so it lasts
Wash cold, inside out. Tumble low or hang dry. Fold knits, don't hang them. That's it.
